01 — About

I'm Ian. I fix law firms and hurt feelings.

Usually in that order. Nineteen years inside law firms taught me that the thing nobody wants to say out loud is almost always the thing that fixes everything. So I say it. Loudly. Then I help you do something about it.

02 — The long version

How a burnt-out attorney became the guy who says the quiet part.

I didn't set out to be a coach. I set out to be a lawyer, and for a while I was a pretty mediocre one — nobody teaches you that running the firm is the actual job. The law is the easy part.

I took over a practice three bad months from closing. I made every mistake worth making — overpaid the wrong people, underpriced the right work, confused being busy with being profitable. Then I started watching the numbers instead of my ego, and things changed fast.

By the time other owners asked how I did it, I'd figured out the part nobody sells you: it's not a tactic, it's a willingness to look straight at the thing you've been avoiding.

“I'd rather lose a client by being honest than keep one by being a salesman.”

03 — The road here

Nineteen years, abbreviated.

2005
Passed the bar. Immediately discovered law school taught me nothing about running a business.
2008
Took over a sinking three-attorney practice. Kept it alive by killing everything that didn't work.
2013
Grew it to fourteen attorneys — then realized I'd built myself a very expensive job.
2016
Rebuilt the whole thing to run without me. Took my first real vacation in a decade.
2019
Started telling other owners the truth. They kept paying me to keep doing it.
Now
Coaching a handful of firms, speaking anywhere they'll hand me a mic, and writing the next book.

04 — What I actually believe

Six things, no caveats.

01
Most firm problems are owner problems wearing a disguise.
02
If you can't take a week off, you don't own a firm — it owns you.
03
Marketing can't fix a service you're embarrassed by.
04
Your team isn't lazy. Your systems are.
05
Charging more is a decision, not a milestone.
06
The work isn't the hard part. Telling the truth is.

05 — Expectations, set

What you won't get. What you will.

You won't get
A 90-day funnel and a coffee mug
Motivational platitudes
Jargon I can't define in one sentence
A contract designed to trap you
Me pretending everything's fine
You will get
The truth about what's actually broken
The numbers, looked at honestly
Homework, and someone who checks it
A guy who answers the phone
An honest “I don't know” when I don't

06 — Off the clock

I'm more fun than this page makes me look.

When I'm not telling people hard things, I'm probably at a smoky barbecue joint, arguing about baseball, or failing to fix something in my garage. I answer my own emails, I remember your kids' names, and yes — the beer offer is real.
